I began exploring why certain coastal cities across Korea—Taean, Uljin, Yeosu, and Jeju—had already launched sea ranching projects, while my hometown Busan lacked any aquaculture initiatives despite having Korea’s largest fish market. I suspected that underlying environmental constraints played a role, which motivated me to study Busan's marine ecosystem in greater depth.
In 2023, I focused my research on Yeongdo, which is one of the districts in Busan city and also a home to South Korea's shipbuilding and vessel inspection industries. To understand the area’s ecological and industrial development, I visited Kanakangee Village Museum in the winter of 2024 and discussed the district’s industrial history with its curator.
